Sermon by Bro Jason McNeese, pastor of Rural Retreat Baptist Church in Rural Retreat, VA:
The Life of Lot
A Character Study
Sermon #6
The Birthright of His Life
Text: Genesis 19:36-38/Deuteronomy 2:9, 19
Psalm83:8/II Chronicles 20:
Abraham passed down a birthright that was worth fighting for as can be seen in the separation between Ishmael & Isaac, and can also be seen in the struggle between Esau & Jacob. But the birthright that was passed down from Lot is one of shame and reproach.
An Unspeakable Past – Genesis19:36-38
The only sons that Lot had were conceived in a shameful act of drunken incest with his two daughters. It is interesting to note that he had no sons in Sodom. To be a descendant of Lot was to have a shameful birthright. It was the kind of thing people don’t like to talk about. They became the fathers of the Moabites and the Ammonites, devout enemies of God’s people. Our sinful past and our former alliances are nothing to be proud of!
An Unbelievable Protection – Deuteronomy 2:9, 19
Why did God protect this God denying crowd? This is an unbelievable act of compassion on a people who deserve an unbridled act of condemnation! Aren’t you glad we can stop asking “Why me?” and instead we can ask “Who Am I?”Who am I to receive such mercy, compassion & grace?
An Undeniable Provocation – Psalm 83:8/II Chronicles 20
After all God has done for this crowd they still provoke the wrath of God.Our wickedness is even more undeniable when placed in the light of Calvary. When God has done all He can to protect us we still provoke Him with our rebellious and wicked ways.
An Unimaginable Provision – Ruth, the Moabitish Woman!
The Lineage of Christ – Matthew 1:5
How can this be?From the lineage of wickedness, from an unspeakable past steps forward a character of unimaginable provision. No one who knows of Moab’s beginning would ever give him a hope any kind of future and yet God had other plans. He reaches down into this wretched family and plucks out one little Moabitish woman gleaning in a field. He picks her up out of Moab, a product of Lot’s unspeakable past, and puts her in the Family of God! Need I say more?
